Accounting & bookkeeping

Every service explained, in plain English.

Not sure what a "self-assessment" or "MTD" is, or whether you need it? Each service below says what it is, who needs it, what we do and what we need from you.

What is it?

Bookkeeping means recording every payment in and out of your business and matching it to your bank statement. Done every month, it means your accounts are always up to date and your tax return is quick and accurate.

Who needs it?

Anyone with a business bank account and regular sales or costs: sole traders, landlords and limited companies. It's essential if you're VAT registered, have staff, or want to know how your business is really doing.

What we do for you

  • Set up your business in Xero accounting software, or take over your existing books
  • Reconcile your bank every month so every transaction is recorded and explained
  • Record sales invoices, bills and receipts, and chase missing paperwork
  • Send you a simple monthly summary: money in, money out, profit so far
  • Answer your questions all year round at no extra cost

What you send us

  • Access to your bank feed (read-only, we can't move money)
  • Photos of receipts and bills, using the Xero app or WhatsApp
  • A quick reply when we ask what a payment was for

What is it?

A self-assessment is your personal tax return. HMRC uses it to work out how much income tax and National Insurance you owe on income that isn't taxed through payroll. It covers the tax year 6 April to 5 April and must be filed online by 31 January.

Who needs it?

You need one if you're self-employed, a landlord, a company director taking dividends, earn more than £150,000, or have untaxed income such as foreign income or large savings interest. Missing the deadline means an automatic £100 penalty, rising over time.

What we do for you

  • Register you with HMRC if you're new, and get your UTR number
  • Work out your income and every allowable expense so you don't pay more tax than you should
  • Prepare the return, show you the figures and the tax due, then file it once you approve
  • Tell you exactly how much to pay, by when, and about any payments on account

What you send us

  • Your UTR and National Insurance number
  • Income records: invoices, bank statements, P60 or rent received
  • Business costs and receipts
  • Any P11D, pension or student loan information

What is it?

Making Tax Digital is HMRC's new way of reporting income. Instead of one tax return a year, you keep digital records and send a short update to HMRC every three months, then a final declaration after the year ends.

Who needs it?

Since 6 April 2026, sole traders and landlords with income over £50,000 must use MTD. From April 2027 the limit drops to £30,000, and from April 2028 to £20,000. Income means your total turnover and rent before costs, not profit.

What we do for you

  • Check whether and when MTD applies to you, and sign you up with HMRC
  • Keep your records in HMRC-approved software
  • Send all four quarterly updates on time
  • Complete the final year-end declaration, which replaces your normal tax return

What you send us

  • Access to your bank account feed, or your statements each quarter
  • Receipts for business or property costs
  • Details of any other income such as a salary or pension

What is it?

A limited company is a separate legal business. Every year it must file accounts with Companies House, a corporation tax return with HMRC and a confirmation statement. Directors usually also need their own self-assessment.

Who needs it?

Every limited company, even one that hasn't traded. Late accounts get an automatic Companies House penalty starting at £150, and directors can be personally fined.

What we do for you

  • Prepare and file your year-end accounts with Companies House
  • Prepare and file your corporation tax return (CT600) and tell you the tax due
  • File your annual confirmation statement
  • Advise the most tax-efficient mix of salary and dividends
  • Include your director's self-assessment return

What you send us

  • Your company's bank statements, or access to Xero
  • Sales invoices and purchase bills
  • Details of any loans, assets bought, or money you took out

What is it?

VAT is a tax added to the price of most goods and services. VAT-registered businesses charge it to customers, reclaim it on costs, and pay the difference to HMRC every quarter using MTD software.

Who needs it?

You must register for VAT if your taxable turnover goes over £90,000 in any 12 months. Some businesses register voluntarily to reclaim VAT on their costs.

What we do for you

  • Register you for VAT and advise the best scheme (standard, flat rate or cash accounting)
  • Check every VAT invoice and reconcile your bank before submission
  • File your VAT return under MTD and tell you what to pay and when

What you send us

  • Sales and purchase invoices showing VAT
  • Bank access or statements for the quarter

What is it?

Payroll means paying employees and directors correctly, with tax and National Insurance taken off and reported to HMRC each time you pay. CIS is the Construction Industry Scheme, where contractors take 20% or 30% tax off payments to subcontractors.

Who needs it?

Any business with employees, or a director taking a salary. CIS applies to construction businesses that pay subcontractors.

What we do for you

  • Run payroll and send payslips every pay day
  • Report to HMRC in real time (RTI) and work out what to pay
  • Set up and manage workplace pension auto-enrolment
  • Verify subcontractors and file monthly CIS returns

What you send us

  • Staff details and hours or salary changes
  • Subcontractor details and invoices for CIS
